A patronymic in රුසියානු

This template is used in definitions for foreign names, especially but not necessary names of well-known people. This may be used, for example, to create an Italian entry for English-language names like Clinton, Bush or Blair, or an English entry for Polish-language names like Wałęsa. Most commonly this is used when the script of the source-language and destination-language names are the same and no significant phonetic respelling has been applied. (The source and destination names need not be identical; e.g. පෝලන්ත Wałęsa is often rendered as ඉංග්‍රීසි Walesa, without the accent marks.)

|1= (required)
Language code of the destination language; see Wiktionary:List of languages.
|2= (required)
Language code of the source language.
|3=, |4=, ...
Zero or more source names from which the name of the entry in question is derived.
|type= (required), ...
The type of the name. It should be one of the following: surname, male given name, female given name, unisex given name or patronymic.
|dim=
If specified, indicate that the name is a diminutive.
|aug=
If specified, indicate that the name is an augmentative.
|t=, |t2=, ...
Glosses for the source name(s) specified in |3=, |4=, ..., respectively. |gloss=, |gloss2=, ... are deprecated synonyms.
|tr=, |tr2=, ...
Manual transliterations for the source name(s) specified in |3=, |4=, ..., respectively. Not needed in most cases for most languages.
|ts=, |ts2=, ...
Transcriptions for the source name(s) specified in |3=, |4=, ..., respectively. Meant to describe the pronunciation for certain languages (e.g. Tibetan) where the transliteration and pronunciation are radically different.
|alt=, |alt2=, ...
Display form for the source name(s) specified in |3=, |4=, ..., respectively. See {{m}} for more information.
|id=, |id2=, ...
Sense ID for the source name(s) specified in |3=, |4=, ..., respectively. See {{m}} and {{senseid}} for more information.
|g=, |g2=, ...
Gender(s) for the source name(s) specified in |3=, |4=, ..., respectively. Multiple comma-separated genders can be specified for each name. See {{m}} for more information.
|xlit=, |xlit2=, ...
Conventional/non-scientific transliterated equivalent(s) for the name in question. This can be used when the automated transliteration appears unfamiliar; compare e.g. the automated transliteration of the names Чайко́вский (Čajkóvskij), Рахма́нинов (Raxmáninov), Горбачёв (Gorbačóv) with the conventional Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Gorbachev.
|eq=, |eq2=, ...
Equivalent English name(s) for the name in question. Note the difference between this parameter and the previous one. For example, රුසියානු Михаи́л (Mixaíl) has conventional transliteration Mikhail but equivalent name Michael.
|sort=
Sort key for the categories generated by this template. Rarely needed, except in Japanese.

On the Italian page Clinton:

{{foreign name|it|en|type=surname}} produces

A පෙළපත් නාමය in ඉංග්‍රීසි

and categorizes the page into Category:it:English surnames.

On the English page Walesa:

{{foreign name|en|pl|Wałęsa|type=surname}} produces

A පෙළපත් නාමය in පෝලන්ත, Wałęsa

and categorizes the page into Category:en:Polish surnames.

Note how in this latter case the source name is specified explicitly since it is not the same as the destination name (which has had the accents removed).

On the Italian page Socrate:

{{foreign name|it|grc|Σωκράτης|type=male given name}} produces

A male given name in පුරාතන ග්‍රීක, Σωκράτης (Sōkrátēs)

and categorizes the page into Category:it:Ancient Greek male given names.

Note here that {{name translit}} could also be used, but arguably Socrate is not a very good transliteration of the source Greek name since it lacks the final -s.
