Ogham was used primarily for inscriptions in Primitive Irish, and was used later for Pictish, Old Irish, and was adapted to manuscript use. It is from the descriptions of Ogham in manuscripts, especially in Auraicept na n-Éces, that we get the names of the letters and the values of the unattested letters.

It is canonically arranged in four groups (or aicme) of five characters, each group named after the first letter in that group, and a subsidiary group of forfeda containing the extra letters which don't fit into the four-by-five grid.
