Example and quotation template customised for Chinese.

{{zh-x|FORM|TRANSLATION}}
  • By default, this template gives a multi-lined example usage for a specified Chinese variety in the following order: (1) Traditional Chinese script (2) Simplified Chinese script (if title is both trad/simp and if simp usex is different from trad) (3) Reference (if provided) (4) Romanization (Pinyin by default unless dialectal variety is specified) (5) Translation (optional)
  • Note that FORM has to be in the traditional script.

Additional parameters:

  • |3=
Variety (eg. C for Cantonese; CL for Classical Chinese; MN for Min Nan) specifiable at parameter 3. If unspecified, default variety is MSC. See Module:zh-usex/data for list of variety codes.
  • |tr=
    Transliteration.
  • |tr_nocap=1
Turns off the capitalization of the first letter of the transliteration (so that the first letter is not modified).
  • |ref=
Reference (author followed by name of work). See also Module:zh-usex/data for abbreviations of historical works.
  • |in_notes=
'y' if it is not used after a '#'-indented definition.
  • |a=
An audio file of the given example sentence.
  • |collapsed=
    |collapsed=y Shows the traditional characters and English translation, with simplified characters and romanization available in a drop down box. Used for Classical Chinese quotes.
  • |nocat=y
Suppress categorization into Category:Chinese terms with quotations or Category:Chinese terms with usage examples.
  • |lit=
adds (literally, “literal meaning”) after the translation
  • |simp=
    |simp=y if the original text is in simplified. Only works for {{zh-q}} and other quotation templates; raises an error otherwise or when |3= is not supposed to be written in simplified.
  • CHAR{ROM}
Override the automatic romanization of CHAR with ROM, e.g. 花兒{r} or 樣{joeng6-2}.
  • ^CHAR
Capitalises the first letter of the romanization of the ensuing character, e.g. ^亞洲. Note that sentence-initial letters in romanization is automatically done.
  • @WORD
    Do not link to WORD.
  • CHAR\RAHC
Links to CHAR while displaying RAHC.
  • TCHAR[SCHAR]
Forces a traditional character TCHAR to convert to a different simplified character SCHAR, e.g. 著[着].
  • CHAR.CHAR
Produce pinyin of CHAR CHAR but link to CHARCHAR.
(To add example sentences which include a '.' in the text, see the example sentence on the 地牛翻身 page. HTML entities .)
  • CHAR-CHAR

[Pinyin]
Whenever King Xuan of Qi had men play the yu [a mouth organ], there had to be 300 men playing simultaneously.
A reclusive scholar, by the name of Nanguo [lit. southern wall of a city], who was unable to play the instrument, asked if he could join the ensemble and play the yu for the king. King Xuan was delighted by this, and dispensed enough food rations for several hundred musicians.
Then, King Xuan died, and King Min took the throne. He preferred to listen to the yu players one-by-one, so the reclusive scholar fled. (Wiktionary translation)
